India vs England Test series

With 30 points available for each test, England need a 3-1 win to leapfrog both India and Australia in the standings.

India, meanwhile, need two wins and a draw to ensure what started as an outstanding campaign in the inaugural Championship ends in a place in the final.

With the Anthony de Mello Trophy also up for grabs – which India most recently reclaimed in the 2016-17 season – the series starts in Chennai on February 5.

India go into the series having won all five of their home tests – three against Bangladesh and three against South Africa – alongside beating Australia and West Indies away.

Their sole series defeat came against New Zealand.

India Team Squad for Test Series

Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Mayank Agarwal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), Axar Patel, Cheteshwar Pujara, KL Rahul, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav

England Team Squad for Third Test

Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

  • Virat Kohli (India)

Reached 50 for the 50th time in test cricket in his only test appearance against Australia. Out for 74, he now has 23 half-centuries and has turned a further 27 into centuries. The India captain is back with the national team and will be key once again with the bat.

  • Cheteshwar Pujara (India)

His incredible half-century says very little on paper compared to what it was actually worth to India against Australia last time out. Pujara was bombarded by the Aussie paceman but stood firm for what ultimately proved a series-winning innings.

  • Rishabh Pant (India)

The wicket-keeper-batsman smashed 89 from 138 balls to win the series last time out and become the fastest of his compatriots in his position to reach 1,000 test marks to prove he has a future in this team.

  • Joe Root (England)

The England captain was in the form of his life in Sri Lanka, scoring 228 and 186 and taking two wickets too. As he prepares for his 100th test match, he could be the key to England upsetting the odds in this series.

  • Dom Bess (England)

The 23-year-old spinner claimed 12 wickets in the series in Sri Lanka and will be a key figure as England look to do something they have so often being unable to do – exploit the turning Indian pitches. Chennai in particularly could be helpful.

  • Ben Stokes (England)

Back in the test-match picture, the all-rounder established himself as England's key man in all formats in his stunning 2019 season. After a difficult 2020 for personal reasons, which ended in the death of his popular father Gerard, Stokes will have extra incentive to make his mark in this series.

India vs England Test Series Betting odds

India are big favourites to win on home soil, having won every single one of their home tests in the ICC World Test Championship so far. They will also have been buoyed by their victory in Australia.

Bet365 are offering just 1.25 on India to win the series, while England are big outsiders at 8.50. A drawn series is 6.50 with Bet365.

India are 1.25 favourites with Betway too, who have also priced the draw at 6.50 but listed England as 8.00 to claim a rare win on Indian soil.

For India, a 2-1 series win would be enough to secure their place in the ICC Test Championship Final at Lord's and that result is 5.50 with Betway.

India to win 3-1, meanwhile, will return 4.50 – as will a 3-0 or 4-0 win. India are very much favourites for this one.

England need at least a 3-1 win to claim their place in the ICC Test Championship Final and can be backed for as high as 29.00 with Betway to win by that margin.

Considering they lost 4-0 on their last tour of India, it is no surprise. They last won three tests in India in 1976/77.

India have home advantage and England, despite the form they showed in Sri Lanka, know their hopes of a place in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final are slim at best.
England are not expected to get anything from this series, but Joe Root's batting last time out and the return of Ben Stokes means they have the quality to avoid a whitewash.
Nevertheless, India are big favourites and a 3-1 win would reflect their dominance – as well as booking their trip to Lord's to face New Zealand.

Back India to win the test series at odds of 1.25 with bet365 and betway. Back India to win the test series 3-1 at 4.50 with Betway.
